Close, but not quite
Gainesville was a very productive weekend for my Quaker State funny car team. The weekend really starts with qualifying. Qualifying in the bottom half of the ladder doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to have a bad day on Sunday. We’ve proven that in Gainesville by qualifying in the 11th position and finding our way to the final elimination round.
And the fields are very competitive. In our process of getting to the final round, we were able to take out the current points leader as well. When it came time for the final, there was a little added drama because I had to race a very close friend of mine, Bob Tasca.
Bobby was my best man and is the godfather of my youngest son. Although I was racing one of my best friends, winning would have been better, but I was happy for him.
Overall, the weekend went very well. Our performance put us back in the Top 10 in points and moved us all the way up to the sixth position. As competitive as I am, I always look at the silver lining. A good team will always rebound from a slow start…
