The Fast Lane: Building on momentum

Friday, June 26th, 2009
So I will start where I left off from the last blog with fishtails. That was a hint of the special themed car that we did with Nitro Fish, which is an apparel brand that is very popular in drag racing. But under the skin it’s a Quaker State car and we were able to continue the performance that we pulled out the previous weekend in Chicago when we won.

I think the momentum is good and it did move us up to first in points. I would love to hang on to the top spot, especially going into the countdown, but the reality for me is that my goal is to be in the top three and we’re going to work real hard to maintain that. I’ve always raced with the attitude if we do our job and if the car is set up right the wins will come. So I’ll continue to race that way and I’m not going to change anything. When we were down and out and trying to fight our way into the top 10, I really still had the same attitude…

Stellar Repeat Lands Tony Pedregon in Points Lead at E-town

    Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

A back-to-back win at the UA NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, NJ on June 14, 2009 gives Tony Pedregon and the Quaker State team the points lead in the Full Throttle countdown.

    Round 1 RT ET Speed

    (W) Tony Pedregon (Nitrofish Impala) 0.153 4.074 301.81
    (L) Cory Lee (Fueled by the Fallen Dodge) -9.999(R) NT-Broke

Both cars did their burnouts but when they had the bodies up before staging, Lee’s crew shut the car down. Pedregon had a single run and won lane choice over Worsham in the next round.

    Round 2 RT ET Speed

    (W) Tony Pedregon (Nitrofish Impala) 0.063 4.132 301.60
    (L) Del Worsham (Al-Anabi Racing Solara) 0.071 4.284 269.62

Pedregon is 30 – 18 against Worsham in prior events. He was first out of the gate and stayed out in front for the win. He had low ET of the round, so Pedregon will have lane choice over Wilkerson next time out.

    Semi-Final Round RT ET Speed

    (W) Tony Pedregon (Nitrofish Impala) 0.079 4.132 295.98
    (L) Tim Wilkerson (Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang) 0.098 4.186 290.26

Pedregon had a 19 – 9 record against Wilkerson coming into this weekend. It will be Pedregon vs. Force Hood in the Funny Car final. Pedregon had the quicker start and was out in front the whole way down the track. He got the win and will have lane choice in the final round.

    Final Round RT ET Speed

    (W) Tony Pedregon (Nitrofish Impala) 0.068 4.246 260.56
    (L) Ashley Force Hood (Castrol GTX Mustang) 0.125 4.219 272.72

Force Hood and Pedregon raced each other in the final round at Joliet last weekend. Pedregon got the win then, just as he got the win in Las Vegas in October 2007, the only other time he and Force Hood have raced each other in the final round. There was more at stake in this race than just the event title. The winner of this race would leave with the Funny Car points lead.

A holeshot win for Pedregon and both drivers had trouble with their cars in this race. Pedregon got out of the gate first and extended his lead at 330 feet. His car started to move around and get a little loose, giving Force Hood a chance to close the gap. But then Force Hood’s car started to move around a bit before it started heavily trailing smoke as it crossed the finish line.

The Fast Lane: Chicago sees great success

    Friday, June 12th, 2009
We went into the Chicago race with a slightly different strategy, one that was a little more aggressive, and the result was win number one in 2009!

In the couple of final rounds that we’ve been to, we weren’t quite perfect and we left a little performance on the table. If you do that enough, it’s just a matter of finding the medium, finding the right balance of not being too aggressive yet not being aggressive enough.

NHRA FULL THROTTLE DRAG RACING SERIES INVITED TO RING OPENING BELL AT NYSE

    Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

NHRA President Tom Compton and Coca-Cola executives Bea Perez and Ben Reiling will be joined by George Pyne, President of IMG’s Sports and Entertainment Group

GLENDORA, Calif. (June 3, 2009) — The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, which has more than 20 sponsors and/or partners who are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has been invited by the NYSE to perform the prestigious task of ringing  The Opening Bell  at 9:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, June 10, 2009.

The ringing of the Opening Bell will kick off a momentous week for the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, which will be hosting the 40th annual United Association NHRA SuperNationals June 11-14 at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series remains the only major motorsport to host a race in the New York Area, the nation’s No. 1 DMA.

NHRA President Tom Compton will be joined in ringing the Opening Bell by Coca-Cola North America Senior Vice President, Integrated Marketing Beatriz Perez, Coca-Cola North America Director of Motorsports Marketing Ben Reiling and George Pyne, President of IMG’s Sports and Entertainment Group.

“This is a tremendous honor, but more important is the statement this makes about the fundamental strength of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series as an elite sports and entertainment property,” Compton said. “And in this climate, in this economy, as companies scrutinize their marketing budgets like never before, return on investment is the imperative on every sponsor’s mind and we have never been more confident in our ability to compete – and deliver – on both fronts.”

It’s a fact that one of the pre-eminent players in the sports sponsorship space, Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO, CCE), can endorse.

The globally iconic brand, which was just awarded the “Sports Sponsor of the Year” award at the annual SportsBusiness Journal Awards Show, has sponsored NHRA’s top professional series since 2002 and it will continue to do so through at least 2013. Coca-Cola re-branded the Series from POWERade to Full Throttle Energy Drink prior to the 2009 season and heavily activated behind the re-branding, including a series of six commercials and the debut of Full Throttle TV, which can be accessed via NHRA’s home page (http://www.NHRA.com).

IMG’s Pyne, whose global sports, entertainment and media company formed a strategic alliance with NHRA in April 2008, added this about NHRA: “When we looked at NHRA, we saw a property with great value. We’re very enthusiastic about NHRA and very bullish on its future.”

NHRA will also be hosting a fan fest in front of the NYSE that is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET. The street will be shut down to accommodate the Matco Tools dragster, Geico Powersports dragster, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang, Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson and the Geico Suzuki. Full Throttle Energy Drink will also present a themed NHRA Full Throttle Series banner on the façade of the NYSE.

The contingent on the podium will include several drivers – Antron Brown (Matco Tools), Ashley Force Hood (Ford, BP/Castrol), Bob Tasca (Ford), Tony Pedregon (Quaker State), Eddie Krawiec (Harley-Davidson), Morgan Lucas and Karen Stoffer (Geico) – as well as executives Marci Brand (Castrol), Darryl Hazel (Ford) and Eric Vaden (Geico).

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. It presents 24 events through its NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has 80,000 members and 140 member tracks. The NHRA-sanctioned sportsman and bracket racing series provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels. The NHRA develops the stars of tomorrow by offering the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Racing Series, and the NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style presented by AAA. The NHRA also offers the Jr. Drag Racing League for youth ages 8 to 17.

The Fast Lane: Looking to rebound after Kansas

    Friday, June 5th, 2009

This weekend we’re racing at one of my favorites — Chicago’s Route 66 Raceway.

I think for the sport to continue to grow, there are some key elements we need. The TV package is essential to this sport and its growth. The level of competition, which happens to be as good as it has ever been, needs to be at a high. The rivalries between the Pedregons, the Forces and the Capps all need to exist. All of these components need to be in place — and at the present time are in place…
